The city is located in the northeast hillside of the Rio Grande do Sul, 155 km from Porto Alegre, the capital of the state. The total population is 107 thousand including field side and the town.The economical basis of the city is the treatment and industrialization of the tabacco. The product warrant a global projection for the town and its micro region, besides worldwide recognized indutries.
The tourism distinguishes the city, being recognized to possess the larger Cathedral in neogothic of latin america. The cathedral´s name is São João Batista and it is located in hearth of the city.
Besides the tabacco pole, the municipal administration is creating incentives to diversify the city´s economy and one of this incentives was the creation of technological pole where nowadays the Imply Tecnologia Eletrônica is settled as the pioneer of the project.
